Cybersecurity threats are worrying consumers and affecting their shopping decisions, according to a study by Bizrate Insight. A third (34%) of those surveyed said that data security concerns cause them hesitate to buy online and nearly a third (29%) say they hesitate to buy in stores.

62% of consumers say brick-and-mortar stores aren’t doing enough to protect their credit card and personal information, while 60% are concerned about websites, and 65% are concerned about mobile sites.

Amazon and PayPal were the top most trusted companies when it comes to credit-card security, the survey found.

This is a serious issue for retailers on and off the web, and the more hacks that happen, the further consumer trust will erode. The FBI of late has consistently said that many major hacks happen to retailers that are in some way lax in enforcing their own cybersecurity protocols. So, while retailers and law enforcement agencies often must catch up to data thieves, there are existing ways to fight the problem.
