Dive Brief:
- After announcing its use of AI for product review summaries, Amazon is using generative artificial intelligence to help sellers create product descriptions, the company announced Wednesday.
- The large language model technology uses a few words from Amazon sellers to create product descriptions with titles, item details and bullet point lists. The sellers can edit the description or directly submit the description to the Amazon catalog.
- Sellers have tested the feature over the past few months. So far, a majority of sellers have used the product descriptions that the AI generated, according to the company.
Dive Insight:
With its AI-written product descriptions, Amazon is diving deeper into its use of the technology. In August, the company announced plans to use AI for summarizing product reviews from verified buyers. Amazon began testing the feature for select U.S. mobile customers but plans to release it to more customers in the coming months.
Aside from helping sellers write product descriptions faster, using AI to write more precise product descriptions is meant to help customers find products easier, Amazon said. The company disclosed its plans to use the new generative AI capabilities at Accelerate 2023, its annual seller conference.
“With our new generative AI models, we can infer, improve, and enrich product knowledge at an unprecedented scale and with dramatic improvement in quality, performance, and efficiency,” Robert Tekiela, vice president of Amazon selection and catalog systems, said in a statement. Our models learn to infer product information through the diverse sources of information, latent knowledge, and logical reasoning that they learn.”
But, Amazon isn’t the only major e-commerce platform integrating AI into its product description process. This month, eBay unveiled its "magical listing" tool, which uses AI to let sellers extrapolate product details from images and generate product descriptions.
