Dive Brief:
-
Mobile commerce appears to be one of the top priorities among the 70 or so retailers surveyed by Shop.org and Forrester Research for a recent survey.
-
But the survey also teased out that many of them — 56% — say that developing mobile apps is “not a key component of their mobile strategy to consumers,” despite the fact that much research has found that 90% of time spent on mobile is via apps.
-
Retailers are putting their emphasis on mobile sites: 77% say they have a mobile optimized website and 46% say they're using responsive design, according to the survey. Still, the survey found that, overall, spending to advance mobile is “modest.”
Dive Insight:
Shop.org and Forrester Research have found much caution on the part of retailers in their development of mobile shopping venues for their customers. What’s unclear is the reason. Many retailers in this survey do say they’ll boost their spending on mobile developments in the near future. In any case, it seems pretty clear that consumers have moved to mobile already. Whether retailers will catch up in time, that's yet to be determined.
