Skin care brand Futurewise is shutting down.
The brand, which became known for its products for “slugging” — a skin care practice in which an occlusive layer is applied on the skin to prevent water loss — has begun 60% off sales on its website. The final day to place orders is March 24, the company said.
“After a lot of thought, we have made the hard decision to sunset Futurewise,” the brand wrote on its website. “We are deeply grateful for your trust and support over the years — it’s been an honor to be part of your skincare routine.”
The brand expanded its reach soon after launching in late 2022, moving into Target’s stores and website in February 2023. Over the years, Futurewise had also expanded to Urban Outfitters and CVS.
The brand was co-founded by Julie Schott and Brian Bordainick, who also co-founded acne patch brand Starface, Blip, which sells nicotine replacement therapy products, and personal care brand Plus. However, Plus shut down last May, according to multiple media reports, and the website is no longer active.
The announcement of Futurewise shuttering came around the same time Hims & Hers announced its dermatology business, Apostrophe, would be closing as well. The company — which Hims & Hers acquired in 2021 — canceled all subscriptions as of Friday, according to its website. Refunds will be issued over the coming weeks, and users will be able to access their provider teams and receive support for the next 30 days.
Growth in the skin care category may be slowing, according to a recent report from Circana. Across prestige beauty categories, skin care was the softest-growing category with dollar sales up 2%. Within the mass market, skin care similarly saw “a modest increase” across sales.
