Dive Brief:
-
Walgreens EVP Jeff Berkowitz is leaving the company, the Chicago Tribute reports.
-
Berkowtiz was chief of the company’s pharmaceutical and global market access team and was with Walgreens for five years. His duties are being divvied up among existing departments.
-
The move is the latest in a top executive reshuffling after the company merged with U.K. drugstore retailer Alliance Boots, including the recent appointment of Stefano Pessina as CEO.
Dive Insight:
The name on the company’s shingle is “Walgreens” but the retailer’s top executive team is increasingly looking like “Alliance Boots.”
Pessina, who is widely seen as helping push the company’s recent merger with the U.K. company, has said that the U.S. retail drugstore space is ripe for consolidation. Observers expect the company to gobble up smaller or regional drugstore retailers, and perhaps acquire a benefits or pharmaceutical company.
We’ve already seen this kind of consolidation, with CVS Health’s acquisition of Target pharmacies, and its acquisition of pharmaceutical sales company Omnicare.
