Dive Brief:
-
Contrary to rumors that Apple’s presentation of what is so far known as iWatch would be delayed until next year, Re/Code now reports that the company will unveil a new wearable when it introduces the iPhone 6 next month.
-
The wearable will likely include HealthKit and HomeKit features, which allow users to track medical and fitness details and to control devices in the home, according to Re/Code.
-
Apple is also said to be planning a reveal of a larger iPad and changes to the iPad mini.
Dive Insight:
No surprise that there’s no comment from Apple on any of these rumors — the company is just saying "We wish they could say more." The mystery only adds to the anticipation, of course, and much will be revealed Sept. 9, assuming the wearable news is part of that event. But while such news has been highly anticipated in the tech realm, wearables are turning out to be less of a slam-dunk so far among consumers. Google Glass, for example, has garnered criticism for its high price point and unfashionable styling, while wearables in general have turned out to have both limited use and limited appeal.
